Treasured Objects

Each owner of a personal digital library would have his or her own classification for the artifacts that fill a virtual home.  In the case of The Bailiwick Project, the home was the residence of the owner until a little past his 9th birthday, so naturally childhood toys would be a major category.  A second category in this particular case are family-owned technologies, including communications technologies and the black Buick that was the family's main (but not only) vehicle during this period.

In ceating the virtual heritage home, I was able to find material on the web, including pictures of many of the items, that allowed me to create a crude model of the object in many cases, and to place a link to the relevant website inside the object.  An interesting point about the toys and the electronic devices is that they can be conceptualized as virtual worlds - simply not computerized as Second Life is.  It is worth remembering that a hugely creative source of contemporary computer games was the MIT Model Railroad Club!

Our car parked in the driveway, with the house and dining room door in the background.  Clear memory records this as a 1938 model, but that proves to be an error.  This picture is similar, but not exactly identical, to pictures of two four-door sedans at the top of this Buick brochure.  Note that the fenders have more pointed tails in this picture, and the distinctive Buick decoration on the side of the front is different.  This picture matches brochures of the 1936 models.
